Sostra is a well- preserved roadside complex situated on the ancient Roman road “Via Trayana”. It is located in the Osam river valley near the village of Lomets, 12 km to the north of Troyan and 28 km to the south of Lovech.
On an area of 4 square kilometers during the period between 2 nd and 5 th century there were a strongly strengthened camp( fortress), civilian settlements, buildings and necropolises ( cemeteries) .
The fortress was a standard basic camp of a subsidiary infantry unit which numbered from 500 to 1000 Roman soldiers. The Roman roadside station Sostra was built on a territory which once had been inhabited by the Thracian tribe Crobizi( 1 st Millennium BC) .
The Museum of crafts is a place where some magnificent finds are being preserved. They were found in the archeological diggings. As a result, the fund “Archeology” disposes of a rich collection of ornaments, coins, guns, weapons, ceramics, bones, glass and others.
From the past 20 th century till now on the Roman castle`s territory and on the roadside station have been found many epigraphic monuments and all of them are preserved in a specially constructed Lapidarium next to the Museum of crafts. Such monuments are: some official inscriptions high-minded by the soldiers and the commanding officers of the cohorts who used to camp in Sostra; some funeral and votive inscriptions; a sarcophagus`s lid; pedestals; columns and some others.
